Clairemont Resident Opens Cuban-inspired Restaurant
Recently opened, the food at Havana Grill is as inviting as the interior. A long glass display showcases the signature dishes, fresh salads and decadent desserts. This is especially helpful if you are a visual type person and need some assistance selecting your food. Friendly staff takes your order and brings your food allowing you time to take in the many details in the dining area.
On a recent lunch stop, I ordered the El Cubano sandwich ($10). The sandwich was large and could be shared by two people, but naturally this Chowhound had no problem finishing it off. The crispy grilled bread is filled with pork, smoky ham, melted Swiss cheese, mustard and sweet pickles. Every bite had a bit of the crunchy bread with the comforting pork-ham-cheese combo. The best analogy for this sandwich is a Cuban-inspired Panini. It was full of flavor and perfectly accentuated by the sweet pickle and mustard. The sandwich came with house-made plantain chips that were freshly made, cut thin and crispy fried with the perfect amount of salt. I also sampled the signature black beans ($3). Normally I’m not the biggest fan of black beans, but these were velvety-smooth and flavorful with delicate hints of spices. As I ate, Cuban music played in the background that conjured images of Ricky Ricardo and his swing band, adding to my overall experience. This Chowhound was in Cubano-heaven!
Havana Grill’s signature dishes include a variety of slow-roasted, marinated pork dishes with house garlic mojo sauce that some say is so good it’s criminal. Also on the menu are a variety of sandwiches and salads. For drinks, you can get traditional café Cubano ($3), house-made sangria ($5) and a mojito ($6) in addition to beer, wine, sodas and other specialty drinks.
If you’re in the mood for something a little different, treat yourself to some authentic Cuban food. Once you visit, I’ll bet you’ll be thinking about a trip to Havana. Havana Grill is open daily from 11am – 9pm.
